The Indian Life Coach Cycling Journal 27/07/13 Today I cycled 26 Kms in the morning. I packed my water bottle, mobile and a camera. I went to a dear friend’s house only to find that he was out of station. I was received by his 79 year old father. I touched his feet and he blessed me. As we got talking I asked him to tell me about his yester years. Over the years I have spoken to many elderly people whom I have asked to tell me about their childhood and then we travel the years together. Today, too, uncle told me some things which are more precious than a titanium jewellery. Thought I will share a few things… - a generation of senior citizens living in north India were born in West Pakistan. - most of them have seen and experienced the horrifying partition violence. - most still carry their scars etched deep in their source. - most lost kith and kins and almost everyone lost their earnings. - all have survived many hardships and have set up new families and businesses. - all have remarkable entrepreneurship skills which the present generation must emulate. the foundation of these skills was on sincerity, hard work and integrity. - most have contributed in many ways in the growth story of the nation by building small to big business empires to establishing the foundations of education and family values. - they have seen India grow from the child’s perspective to the present grand parent’s perspective. Their experience is unparalleled. As I spoke with uncle, he told me how he lost his father in 1946 and he had to move from Lahore to Sialkot. Later, he set up a small business of sports goods(Sports King) which lost all money as within two months of its starting partition took place and they had to move out. They lost all their money in the Banks and property. He poignantly told me of their journey from Sialkot to RS Pura in Jammu to Gurdaspur to Amritsar and Finally to Delhi. He was in service for all his life and picked up the threads to re -build his family. Stoically, he brought up his kids in the best of school and upbringing. His son studied in DPS RK Puram and runs a business of his own today. His granddaughter, a DIPside herself, has just cleared the SAT and is shortly moving to USA fro further studies. His grandson is a bundle of joy and is a Tennis Pro. His daughter-in-law taught values and education to DPSRKP students. She presently partners Ajay in his business. Post retirement uncle set up many social associations working for the welfare of the retired and the aged. He even spent his own saved money to help grow these associations. At 79 he still helps his son in business. Points to Ponder… - do we really value the contribution of our elders at home? we count it for free. In USA no one helps the kids post 16-18 yrs. Even God cant. Here in India we have constant support of our parents. My mother just made the best breakfast for me! - the administration must honour the contribution of these elders as they have brought stability to the society. As for Ajay I think he is blessed. I am blessed, too, as I have a friend like Ajay who has a ‘man of steel’ as his father.
