Say what you will about The Infamous M.A.V. aka Maverick Marsalis aka D.Kelly Marsalis aka Maverick Manns (and a few other akas) personal life and sordid well documented Internet rumor, lies and alleged Car Thievery and Confidence Man lore. His real life Outlaw status is epic as the one of The United States most high level Counterfeiters and the only counterfeiter in the history of the U.S. Treasury and U.S.Secret Service to have produced Bonds and Bills so exact and perfect that every single one of his transactions all were passed only inside of American Banks all over America. Once Rated by The U.S. Secret as the #1 (high tech) Bank Robber in country. Not only duping bank Tellers and Federal Reserve clearing houses for years but earning praise from G-Men and Secret Service Agents alike for his quality of print work and organizational management of the caper before his jig was up and he was retired with a Federal stint behind the walls in Lompoc California. It was this level of fastidious detail and sophistication as well as his 100% success rate in pulling off the graft at will on any bank in the country that became the sole reason that the U.S. Treasury no long issues out paper U.S. Savings Bonds into circulation. As all U.S. Savings bonds are issued electronically. Mavericks superior counterfeiting ability and ballsy walking of the paper directly in the banks for conversion to pull the stunt was so prolific that the details of the case has been sealed by the U.S. Treasury and the Department of Justice in the interest of National Financial Security. These details were revealed to me during the interview after Maverick broke his 28 years of silence on the matter even showing me the quality of the work as Maverick states it. (see attached photos to this post below) With a boneified street cred and high level sophisticated crime pedigree that continues to fuel his Internet legend of rumors, lies and lore to this very day. Maverick; who has never spoken about his criminal past or sought to glorify it in order cash in the way that many Actors and Rappers like Jay Z, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, Danny Trejo, Lil Kim, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and countless others have extolled their glory days as Criminals, Crack Cocaine Drug Dealers, Gang Bangers , Pimps and Ex-Cons that have crossed over into the main stream of public acceptance. On this point Maverick is very candid and frank. Whenever you see the United States of America vs. Maverick you instantly get it. I had no idea that I had made the Big Time so to speak but.. at the time I was young and cocky and full of beans and didnt think about what I was doing really. As crazy as it seems, I was very motivated by a film called: To Live and Die In L.A. as well as the coming of age classic Risky Business. I entered into an orbit that drew me into these worlds of thrills and excitement as it wasnt long after seeing To Live and Die In L.A. that I was working on become a counterfeiter and taking trips out to L.A. in my Porsche 928 and wow man! One thing lead to another and I found my groove and a huge flaw in the American Bank system that I could walk into any bank in America and present my Bond Documents and walk out with $9,950.00 at a time. Id walk on 6 banks a day and net close to $60,000.00 in cash, most everyday whenever I felt like it. My Crew and I; we had an incredible run of it and as the good times rolled so did my hunger for more. But once the jig was up and I had to come face to face with the G-Men & Women as well as the Federal Task force that was set up to stop us it was a very sobering reality. So much so that Ive never talked about it or sought to make glory of the caper. The real validation came from the Federal Government and the United States Attorneys Office as well as the U.S. Secret Service Agents who handled my case. At the time I had no idea that what I was doing was so prolific and had never been done before in American Criminal or Banking history. I was just doing my thing. But once I got a gander of the scope and the far reaching implications of my Counterfeiting and procedural actions from the Feds then I fully understood as I was facing some 50 years behind bars for the stunt. Nothing sobers you up like that when its you versus The United States of America. Nothing. Upon Mavericks release from Federal Prison in 1995 he took himself on less traveled path brought him to rediscover his passion for Porsche (most notably the 928) and hes gone on to become The Greatest Porsche 928 Customizer in the world and one of the top front engine water cooled Porsche collectors in the world respectively or infamously. It is his flair for collecting and building stunning eye-catching custom Porsche 928s and American Muscle cars that have become just as legendary as his REAL Outlaw past. His latest project, an Outlaw-styled custom 1989 928 S4 Wide Body Cabrio aka Billie Jean was built from an original GT touring car, serves as an exacting point for the mans: I dont give a damn attitude, automotive philosophic approach to his builds and execution of his imaginative ideas plied on to the Porsche 928. His candor on the 928 subject is frank and abashed with keen insights for anyone interested in getting into Porsche 928 Shark Tank while the getting is still good. Maverick’s advice for newcomers to the 928 Porsche fold is simple. Find clean a 928S or S4 model between 1978 to 1990 as they offer what he calls “A terrific performance value for the dollar.” According to Maverick; The Porsche 928 circle of enthusiast are as misunderstood as the 928 is itself. There is a wealth of knowledge swimming around out there and with the majority of the cars in barely running nick many of them have been dismantled and cannibalized for parts (which are very expensive) or complete cars just grossly undervalued. He further notes; The 928 was once the flagship for Porsche. Its most expensive car in the lineup and the car with all of its technical advancements lead Porsche as a struggling family run company into the 21st Century. Mavericks expanded take is: The 928 guy is one who is really passionate about the car and the feeding frenzy of passionate information and hyperbola level of intensity is like putting blood and chum in the water and waiting for the Great White Shark attack to begin! Simply put; The atypical 928 Guy will eat you alive with his or her knowledge of the car! I personally have been eaten alive on the Renns List Boards as its well documented through salacious tales of car thievery and scams and all sorts of tales of just how much of a low life Outlaw I am there. He Chuckles with his robust laugh as he continues. But I find those boards comical in lore, legend and scope as I have very thick skin as a controversial Black Neo-Negro. I just continue to do my own thing and dont follow the pack of convention or worry about what another man may think of me. Nevertheless, I have to thank those guys on Renns List as Ive learned a lot from some of those guys in that blood chum filled Shark tank. REAL quality people like Porsche Master Tech Winn Leo Reese who really helped me understand the lay of the L.A. Porsche land. As well as Mark Anderson and Tom Reichenberg of 928 International fame 928intl/ who have developed a Center of The 928 Universe Zen with parts and info and resources. But If you want to drive and own a Porsche 928 (or any Porsche for that matter) Ive always felt its best to make it unmistakably your own! Mavericks latest project tracks close to that motto. Starting from a street-able touring coupe with great owner history, Maverick was able to conceptualize and complete the entire build in fantastic order. And he splurged on quality and craftsmanship, fabricating together cool one of a kind parts and well sourced modified enhanced equipment to create a over the top, well done and highly executed, clean, fantastic result. “The whole concept for me behind the Billie Jean 928 build was not to have a long, drawn-out 3 year restoration trip down what I like to call the Porsche Al In Wonderland rabbit hole. I had lost control of the car mid-stream of the restoration process for several months but once I got it back into my stable I moved at light speed to complete the project quickly. Maverick says. “I designed and created the concept, fashioned the car together in a short period of time, spared nothing on the budget to make sure it wasnt this big full blown years-long build of Porsche epic proportions. I wanted to be out driving and having a head turning ball in the car and expanding my creative automotive body of work in doing so. The notion for me is in getting it done and not being enamored with the long drawn out process of doing it. Already a Porsche Club of America Concours d Elegance Zone 8 Show Winner. The Outlaw Wide Body Cabrio Billie Jean 928 Porsche is already taking the lead set my its builder. Attracting a litany of attention at the 2014 Monterey Car Week Inaugural PCA Werks Reunion Event and wining Best In Class from the 2014 Santa Barbara PCA Region Concours d Elegance event held at the Four Seasons Hotel In Thousand Oaks California. This kind of affirmation and validation just shows that in spite of the speculative controversy that Maverick is at the center of and yet, very at ease with. It proves his cars are unique in form and function and his designs have propeled him forward to a rarefied place where his cars are identified as a Maverick Porsche in a niche that hes cobbled out for himself. My take on the self described controversial Neo-Negro of the 21st Century is simple. It seems that Maverick channeled his once highly skilled criminal abilities as a historic Counterfeiter and High Tech Bank Robber as well as Smooth Confidence man and reformed himself focusing on his great passion for customizing Porsche and American Muscle cars. Heres a Porsche enthusiast that is passionate about his 928s and in possession of a one of a kind collection of them who is has an engagingly personal demeanor about himself and yet remains an enigma and a mystery in the annals of the Porsche world at large. So much hype is being made right now of Porsche builders who call themselves and their cars Outlaws as its in vogue at the moment and more power to them. But what sets Maverick apart from all of them is that he REALLY was an Outlaw at the very highest levels of his once dubious craft. What Ive gleaned in my in depth interview and research of the man who TRULY has lived and has been about the Outlaw way of life. Is that he knows first hand what being a REAL Outlaw & Outsider is all about. The man has somehow energetically taken the Outlaw mentality and plied it into his craft of customizing Porsche 928s, 944s, 924s and American Muscle Cars with zest and passion. If theres any question the man has crafted some of the finest Porsche 928s on earth.
