The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most-hyped concepts in technology circles. Sogeti (a subsidiary of Capgemini Group) has proclaimed it the fourth stage in the Industrial Revolution behind 1) mechanical production on the basis of water and steam toward the end of the 18th century, 2) the introduction of the conveyor belt and mass production at the beginning of the 20th century, and 3) the digital automation of production via electronics and information technology starting in the latter half of the 20th century.
