The Jazz World Has Suffered A Major Loss. Legendary Joe Sample passed away at age 75. After a series of health issues including 2 heart attacks & a battle with lung cancer, legendary pianist Joe Sample passed away on September 12th. His career spanned 50 years and included playing with some of the biggest names in music from Miles Davis to Marvin Gaye to Ella Fitzgerald, being a member of the Jazz Crusaders & releasing numerous solo albums through out his storied career. Sample’s family confirmed the sad news; “At 9:50pm (Houston,TX time), September 12, 2014, Joe Sample passed. His wife Yolanda & his son Nicklas would like to thank all of you, his fans & friends, for your prayers and support during this trying time. Please know that Joe was aware & very appreciative of all of your prayers, comments, letters/cards & well wishes.” He was truly one of the most influential pianists of a generation & stands as fixture of contemporary jazz.
