The Jewish population of Uzbekistan, home to two distinct communities- the old Bukharan Jewish community and the European-in-origin Ashkenazi community- nearly tripled between 1926 and 1970, reaching almost 104,000 in 1970. In the course of the last two decades over ninety percent of Uzbekistans Jewish population left the country. “One might think that they are all gone and then they show up out of nowhere,” says Rimma Golovina of the Tashkent Jewish Community. “The Jewish World: Uzbekistan” is here.
