The Kiss Lets Talk About Zoos There are good people and there are bad people, there are good companies and there are bad companies, as in zoos there are good zoos and there are bad zoos. We have a habit of tarring zoos though with the same brush and that is just wrong. Until I became involved with photographing animals a few years ago I too was reticent about zoos as well. I was though fortunate to live near one of the best zoos in the world. I know thats a sweeping statement but having become a member of Chester Zoo and seeing the work they do I now feel I can say this. This is a charity registered zoo, there are no shareholders and its a non profit organisation, for every pound spent on the entrance fee 25% is put into conservation. The majority of the keepers are volunteers, they work for free, some for the love of the place and the animals, some to further their education. It is constantly investing in new enclosures with major work underway at the moment to give the animals an even better quality of life. They are not just involved in breeding programs to preserve endangered species, they are involved in conservation programs around the world: actforwildlife.org.uk/projects/projects This include working in China, Nigeria, Borneo, Asia, with black rhinos, Asian elephants and even here in the UK to try and conserve some of our own endangered wildlife. I see how the animals are treated here, I see that they are both cared for and loved, the enthusiasm of the staff is there to see, whats more, I know without the dedication and time spent a lot of the animals they are helping would by now be extinct, thats not the fault of the zoos, thats simply down to humankind
