The Lady I Did Not Marry, by Tekena Ikoko I was a man on a mission. There was no time for fun and games. I was the President of the Voice of Hope Evangelistic Association. My target was clear – Souls must be won. Relationship was out of the question. I jumped from lecture hall to another, blazing and preaching the gospel. University of Benin was my battle Zone. Then, one day, God interrupted me. “You are to get married to her,” He said, “but you must wait until….. and then, you can propose to her.” I received my ‘10 commandments’ and proceeded with my campus assignment. Then, I began to break the rules of relationship. I gradually got close to her. I wanted to secure my prize. I enjoyed the comfort of the warmth of closeness, but it was an undefined relationship. One day, I crossed into uncharted waters…. The condition for proposal as contained in my commission was not yet fulfilled. But I burned and longed for her. I didn’t care anymore. Like Aaron, I couldn’t wait for Moses to come down from the mountain. Like King Saul, I couldnt wait for Samuel to arrive. Tekena couldn’t wait to see his Senior Pastor, or the Warri Pastor, as clearly instructed by the Holy Spirit. I took matters into my own hands. After all, “I am anointed and called,” I assured myself. I opened my mouth. I proposed to her. She agreed. I felt cool, but I lost all my peace, my grace and ultimately, HIS PRESENCE. Then, after two years of aimless relationship, I lost her too. November, 1st, 1996 to early 1998 was the darkest days of my life. I wish I was not born. At last, I could carry on no more in rebellion and I crawled back to God. I pleaded in repentance, but I had lost the King’s daughter. God would have me say nothing about the relationship. I was to call it off. I hurt the King’s daughter. I was a broken man. As I walked to land of Ekiti state in 1998 for my youth service, one thing was clear on my mind. If I was going to venture again into a relationship, it was going to be at God’s timing and it was going to be God’s way. LEARNING POINT ONE: I failed once. I don’t want you to fail. Learn from me. “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but safety is of the LORD.” LEARNING POINT TWO: “Don’t forget that marriage is a ministry and couples are on assignment. You need to find out from the Lord the ministry behind your marriage. You need to discover the assignment given to you and your husband or wife.” Dr. Steve Ogan Watch out for part two... DECLARATION: May you never make the mistakes I made in relationship, and if you have made mistakes, may this post be the stimuli for recovery in Jesus name...
