The Lantern Project: Shine a Light on Syrian Women and Girls in the refugee camp Zaatari in Jordan. We are collecting donations to provide refugee women and girls with lanterns to help reduce the the possibility of exposure to violence and rape incidents. There are 400,000 refugees on the border of Jordan and Syria and the suffering of all forms is horrific. One issue that is not allowed to be discussed is rape, even though it is happening daily. We learned that most rapes happen at night when the camp is pitch black, so one donor has offered to supply 1,000 solar lamps to Syria. This will allow the women to be able to leave their tents between the hours of 4pm and 6am if they need to use the extremely limited toilets. When asking a midwife who has spent much time at Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan whether a lantern would make a different, she replied: This is urgently needed. They need this light in their life.
