The Late, Late show was back live tonight with Drew Carey as the guest host. Despite a touch of laryngitis, Drew put on a great show. The new set has a huge couch, and the guests stayed put which made for a really interesting show. Couldnt have asked for a better line up of guests to kick off the new Late, Late Show starting with the always hilarious Eric Idle. Next up was the beautiful Tessa Thompson starring in the new movie Selma who dished on what its like to party with Oprah. Dave had already had David Oyelowo on his show plugging Selma as well. So funny each time Dave pronounced his name, and it was a treat to see two clips from what looks like a really great movie. Drews last guest was a comedian from Last Comic Standing, Lachlan Patters whose act was very funny, and who was even funnier after Drew invited him to the couch, just like Johnny used to do. Speaking about life on the road, Lachlan talked about checking into a Sleep In motel, and upon finding out the complimentary breakfast ends at 8 am told the clerk the place was not aptly named. It should be called the get up early, youre missing breakfast motel! This cracked Drew up, and Lachlan was quite proud of himself for making Drew laugh. I love all the guests sticking around, the interactions between Eric Idle, Tessa and Drew were priceless. She definitely held her own with the boys, and it so reminded me of Carsons Tonight Show. Im not quite sure this throwback will resonate with an audience used to Craigs antics, but it was the best thing Ive seen on late night in awhile. Unfortunately, Drew will only host the first week and the last week in March before Corden takes over. Between Drew and then, the guest host list includes Will Arnett, Wayne Brady, Jim Gaffigan, Billy Gardell, Sean Hayes, Thomas Lennon, John Mayer and The Big Bang Theory‘s Kunal Nayyar. Cant wait to see John Mayer host. I cant even imagine what that will be like!
