The Liberal Party has registered abbottlies.au as a website to prevent critics launching a site under the same domain name. The address ‘Abbott lies’ is redirected to an image of Joe Hockey grinning behind a banner that encourages people to learn more about the 2014 budget, with the web traffic diverted to liberal.org.au. The unusual political strategy comes after Tony Abbott has been stung by accusations of broken promises during his time as Prime Minister. Labor has openly mocked the Liberal Party’s decision to register the address, with Labor leader Bill Shorten claiming it is ironic that when people type abbottlies.au they are redirected to the Liberal Party’s main website. Domain registry documents revealed the website was registered by the Liberal Party on May 13, which was the same day Joe Hocket announced his highly-criticised first budget. The campaign comes shortly after Abbott and the Attorney General George Brandis were criticised over their explanation of plans to ask telcos to store metadata for longer, claiming it is to protect Australia against crime and terrorism attacks.
