The Liberty Flames Sports Network is looking back at the moments that made 2014 special for Flames Nation. The series concludes today by looking at Moment No. 1, Chima Uzowihes blocked field goal to secure Libertys 15-14 victory over No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina and a Big South title. With starting quarterback Josh Woodrum on the sidelines for the second game in a row, redshirt freshman quarterback Stephon Masha was asked to lead Libertys team in one of the most important games in program history. Masha did just that for 60 minutes of play, including a 17-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in John Lunsfords third field goal of the game. The 32-yard field goal put the Flames ahead by one, 15-14, with 1:20 left on the game clock. Liberty looked to be in pretty good shape, as Coastal Carolina had exhausted its time outs during Libertys go-ahead drive. However, the Chanticleers used three big plays to drive to the Flames six-yard line. Head Coach Turner Gill used back-to-back timeouts with three seconds on the clock to try to rattle the nerves of Coastal Carolina kicker Alex Catron. With the season hanging in the balance, defensive lineman JaRon Greene cleared enough of a path that allowed Uzowihe to block the 24-yard attempt and secure Libertys historic victory. The win, the first ever by a Liberty team against a Division I No. 1 ranked program, secured Libertys seventh Big South title in eight years and propelled the Flames into the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history.
