The Life We Live - Sunday - June 2, 2013 “Who Are You, Lord?” - Introduction God Reveals Himself Roman 1:19-20 (NASB) Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Many people question the existence of God, and others have convinced themselves, listening to vain philosophies, that there is no God. They rely on the wisdom of men. But the Bible points out that there are two ways in which God has revealed His existence, known as general revelation. The first evidence is that God has placed in the very soul of every person the fact of His existence. It is that tugging thought, even compelling at times, that there is a higher authority than us. Frequently we cannot define or adequately describe the thought that we have an overseer; we may decide that it is all nonsense, and bury that thought deep into our subconscious. Yet, in our private thoughts, it still surfaces for us to dwell on. The second general way God reveals Himself is through nature. After studying the tiniest part of an atom, to studying the awesome majesty of the largest known galaxies, many scientists have concluded there is an order to the universe that could only stem from a divine plan, a divine mind, an unseen and indescribable intelligent force. Since our finite minds, left alone, simply cannot come to accurately know much about this infinite power, God chose to reveal Himself to us in yet another more specific way. Perhaps you believe God is real but you ask, “How can I ever get to truly know Him?” 1Corinthians 1:21 (NASB) For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. God chose to appoint men (prophets) to speak and write about God as He revealed Himself to them. This process of speaking and writing is known as “inspiration” or “God-breathed,” and resulted in the document we have today known as the Holy Bible, written over a period of about 1500 years by about 40 different authors. The Bible is complete, consisting of 66 books including both Old and New Testaments. It covers the creation account in Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, to the end times in Revelation, the last book of the New Testament describing the judgment of God and His new heaven and new earth. It is the inspired, infallible word of God; His written message to mankind describes Himself, His nature and character, His love for His creation, the nature of man, and His eternal plan for every person. Can we fully understand God through His message to us? No, because our finite minds cannot fully know the infinite mind of God, but He has provided us all the information we need about Him as we live our daily lives in relationship with Him. God made a promise that He will always be available to those who seek Him. He desires a personal relationship with you! Proverbs 8:17 (NASB) “I love those who love me; and those who diligently seek me will find me.”
