Today I saw a woman running in the Sony booth with her heart rate on display. She was listening to music calibrated for her heart rate, and for at least four minutes, her heart rate stayed steady at 150 beats per minute (bpm). The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle informs us that the act of observation changes things. So I moved into the Sony steady heart runners field of view and started shooting her with my camera. Sure enough, after a few seconds longer than she was used to people shooting her, she became self conscious, and her heart rate went up, to 158 bpm. What the tape doesnt show is get bursting into laughter at me smiling at her. So perhaps her heart rate went up because she liked me and found me, a fellow runner. charming or interesting. Untangling cause and effect is one of the many challenging aspects for U.S. citizen-scientists.
