The Lone Flower The lone flower stood in my yard Towering above the grass in a yard so large I took a moment to think how it stood alone Yet it was powerful in my eyes and it stood tall so others would know. “Powerful” you say in disbelief, ‘you must be a little crazy.’ And then you shake your head and stand there mocking me. It is obvious when looking at the flower the same vision we don’t see I think it radiates and shows it colors bright for all to see, even for you and me. People are like lone flowers sometimes Standing out in crowds, in classrooms, or even when standing in a grocery line. Their faces may shed some light that tells me what kind of life they live But when you look in the same face you might think they show no evidence of what they have to give. People like you tend to dictate to others who they should turn out to be But I think people should be free to express, to explore and this is where me may disagree. You tend to stamp out growth on the ground on which they stand And you try to control how they think and what they do you want to demand. Yet a flower even when it stands alone Tends to weather the stormy storms They seek no cover during the pouring rain Still after the worst of storms the flower always remains. People need to find the strength within To weather the trials and learn to begin To live their lives according to whom they know they are inside And push negativity from others aside. Wear your colors bright and hold your head up high If you stay strong and firmly believe in whom you are tell yourself life’s trials you will survive No matter what people may say to you or how they put you down Never let them break your stem and never to them should you bow. Be like the flower full of confidence to face each day No matter if you should stand alone don’t let people keep you from who you want to be and don’t let them stand in your way. Let people see you shine while you set roots on the paths you want to go Let them know who you are inside, and even if you stand alone be brave enough to let others know. Jeanne Claire Probst
