The Lord of the Rings has always been one of my favorite books. Until yesterday night. My 17 years old daughter is reading the second part right now. She is an artist. Talking with her kinda changed my perspective on the whole thing… Orcs had a white hand painted on their shields. “Do you think it is easy to draw a hand?” – says Shulamit. You need artists for that, professional painters. Orcs had dried fish, right? Who was salting the fish, drying it? Some orc – male or female – did it, correct? Who was “fishing” the fish? It means they had orc-fishermen – or fisherwomen. Most of lands refused to trade with orcs, so they had to do plenty of stuff by themselves. Clothes, food, weaponry, education, ideology – their society was pretty advanced, wasn’t it? How do orcs multiply? About the same as us, right? How do they rear the young? By breastfeeding, of course. Imagine a female orc, breastfeeding her baby in front of the fireplace… In the movie, remember how Fangorn unleashed the waters of Isen on Isengard? The warriors, strong orcs capable of bearing arms were assaulting Helm’s Deep. There were not home. Who remained at the living quarters? The artists, the fishermen, the bakers, the nursing mothers… the CIVILIANS …
