The Maryland Court of Appeals this week affirmed a jury verdict of over $200,000 in damages in favor of a husband and wife whose dog, a chocolate lab named Brandi, was illegally shot by police (thankfully, Brandi survived). The sheriffs deputy falsely claimed the dog was a threat and appeared to be on the attack. His testimony was disproven by his vehicle’s own video camera which showed that Brandi approached the officer wagging her tail and stopped before reaching him: “Chocolate Lab Brandi bounded toward a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy pulled a gun, Brandi stopped and appeared friendly. Then, the deputy shot her.” The jury found that the deputy “violated [the family’s] constitutional rights” and “acted with gross negligence.” I would have added more zeros. Here’s the decision: mdcourts.gov/opinions/cosa/2014/1499s12.pdf People please get your dog OUT OF HARMS WAY IMMEDIATELY if your dog is anyway NEAR the POLICE. LEASH UP and GET HIM OUT OF THERE ! DO NOT GIVE THE POLICE ANY OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT YOUR DOG. YOUR DOG IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! ... YOU ARE HIS GUARDIAN AND HIS PROTECTOR !
