The Meditation Manual for Seekers Weekly Post What If I Am Suddenly Interrupted? Losing your poise by being exposed to a sudden sensory interruption is normal, and avoidable only if you are sequestered or in a soundproof room, etc. Inevitably, over the course of your practice there will come a time when, despite your best efforts, a startling sound will cause you to lose your meditative composure. It may feel bad or surprising. This is due to the functional readiness of the five senses, which later may resist such stimulation when collected through Pratyahara. (see Chapter 14, subtopic: Pratyahara—Reduced Sensitivity to Stimuli During Meditation) I know how frustrating it can be when you are working on a new level of subtle awareness or stillness and are suddenly disturbed. You may become very startled. Sometimes the disruption may result in some anger or anxiety. I have also been startled after a sudden interruption. For example, when I forgot to turn off my phone or someone came into my room when he or she didn’t know I was meditating. These were easy to adjust. Some are more startling like a loud scream, or whatever, because life takes funny turns, so unless you meditate in a soundproof room or in a sensory deprivation container, necessity is the mother of invention when it comes to not being disturbed. Once resting in cognition-only, an early-stage I-sense, sound interruptions do not easily cause startling reactions. The senses are beginning to be ‘collected’. While hearing is the most frequent major disruption, being physically touched is next in line. For example, the cat brushing up against you may be startling, but not nearly as much as when meditating on the subway and a person falls on you when the train makes a sudden move. Just regain your composure, be easy in attitude and forgiving, Reset and continue. I cannot think of a smell taste that would be startling, although some smells are distracting. In general, there are few externally stimulating visual sensations during meditation that would jerk you out, such as bright sunlight peeping through tree branches on a windy day, or automobile headlights coming through an unshaded window at night. I have experienced a fair amount of eternally produced internal visuals, during meditation, but none have startled me. They have distracted me at times, but such visuals are to be ignored and not minded. Reset and continue. Please LIKE and SHARE this page!
