The Morning Report 10/5/14 Another day has begun and hopefully we - TopicsExpress

The Morning Report 10/5/14 Another day has begun and hopefully we will dry out a little more. We are working the cows Tuesday and selling some calves and it would be nice if it were a little drier. Right now it is real damp and I think that it might be “fun” getting the trailer backed up to the loading chute but time will tell. I don’t guess that there is any need to worry about it because we will get it done. Between Mac and the cowboys; we will be able to accomplish it. Although I will admit it has been a trying experience trying to get all of the cows and calves to come to the feed when I have put it out the last two days. The first day, some of them just didn’t want to be bothered and I fed them in another field but they all sort of went there. Yesterday I fed them in the holding pen and about half of them went in there and the rest went to where I had fed them the day before. I was able to bet about 2/3rds in the holding pen finally but today the gate to the other pen will be shut and that won’t be a problem. The real problem that I have is the injured calf. It needs to be nursed every day by its Mom and is; but it is in a different place and I don’t really want to try to put it in the pen with the rest of the cows because of the possibility of hurting it even more. I think that today I will shut them over in the fields with that calf and then put feed out to bring them to the pen and shut some gates so they can’t go to another pasture. I hope that I can defeat them. The peach tree and the Kiwi have been planted and now we wait to see if we get peaches and Kiwi’s next year. The peach tree is one that was developed by U of F for Florida and we will see. I do like fresh peaches and don’t believe that I’ve ever had a Kiwi so a new experience is coming. Where I planted the peach tree was where I had planted some trees that weren’t what I thought they were so I pulled them up. I decided that I would attempt to pull them up with the gator and it worked great; that thing has some pulling power. The area is where we have two avocado trees and they are growing like weeds. We have decided that we are going to prune the tops out so they can be covered during the cold snaps this winter and hopefully be able to get some avocados when they start bearing if we are lucky. If this works, we do have several other smaller avocado trees that will be planted and attempted to grow even more of them. They are a so good. We have figured out what we are going to do with the guavas and that is use the cow panels for sides and put the frost cloths on top and along the sides when cold weather gets here. We will turn the misters on under the cloth and hopefully keep them warm enough to survive and produce guavas for our use and enough maybe to share with friends. I did use the gator to spread some lime yesterday. Tractor supply had it on sale and I bought a few bags to try to see if it wouldn’t change the ph in the soil so the sandspurs wouldn’t grow. We didn’t have that much about 400 pounds and I mounted the spreader on the back of the gator and spread the lime on the fence line where the sand spurs are. If this will work, lime will be put on the field, but first we have to get the soil tested to see what the ph is. Hopefully that will be done soon. Y’all have a great and wonderful day and remember to take a moment to smell the roses! Today is my birthday and for my birthday I hope each and every one of you has a great day and is able to do a kind deed for someone who needs it.
