The Morning Report 5/30/14 Glen is doing well and does not think - TopicsExpress

The Morning Report 5/30/14 Glen is doing well and does not think that we are feeding him enough. He is getting a half gallon of supplement in the morning and the evening and believes that there should be more where that comes from. Zeb got his first lesson in feeding a nursing calf and I think that he enjoyed it. He then got to stick his fingers in its mouth and take it to the water trough to get some water. The calf is doing well and is just another thing on the farm. We do what we can to get everything done and keep everything going, sometimes it seems like a never ending job and it is but to us it is all worth it when we look out on the pasture and see all the cows, Grayson, Eeyore and Mathew eating on the green grass. I know that Glen will become attached in our hearts and really fear that we will get real attached to him and he might become an addition to the pasture instead of a market calf; but who knows what will be tomorrow. For now he is just another chore that we have to tend to and it is something that Zeb can learn about. I’m sure that this calf as it gets bigger will be even friendlier than it is now. Now when we feed it; it does not want us to leave and the reason for that is that we have brought it food. I can visualize a 1500 pound bull walking up to us in the pasture wanting a bottle. We got some needed rain last evening along with some wind and it blew over the tower garden that I had brought out of the greenhouse. It landed on a guava bush and broke a limb on the guava bush but I really don’t think that it has made us lose any guavas. The reason that it blew over was because all the plants in it which are banana peppers are at the top of the tower and there is no weight at the bottom. I will attempt a fix on that today so it doesn’t happen again. I did pick some cucumbers, banana peppers, tomatoes, onions and radishes yesterday. The radishes were actually too tough to eat but the onions were very good. I am going to have to pick the green beans again either today or tomorrow and I think that there will be more than there was on the first picking. I do sort of dread picking them although they are a couple feet off the ground, my back tells me about it before I get through picking. It is worth the suffering to get these vegetables because we know that they are not treated with any chemical and in fact these haven’t been treated with anything but natural stuff from our black cow to chicken manure and no chemicals have been put on them. I cleaned out the nests in the chicken pen the other day and all that material was added to the plants so all the fertilizer that they have received has been natural. It does make us feel better knowing that most of what we are eating does not have any hazardous material on it. We are going to work the cows on Monday and there will be at least 4 bull calves sold and 3 old cows. From looking at them in the pasture; there might be 1 or 2 more calves go; it will depend on what we think they weigh. If they are over 300 pounds, they will probably go. We are keeping 2 big heifer calves as replacements and they look real good. If they haven’t been weaned by the time we work the cows in the fall; they will be then. Our fence guy is supposed to be here on Saturday to do some addition to the pens that we thought about doing several months ago. He was supposed to back out here then but I guess he forgot about it along with the 5 rolls of barbed wire he had left here. It hasn’t been a real big thing but it will be good to get it done. We did have a lightning strike yesterday in the field but luckily the rain put the fire out. It was at a fence in a wet spot so I’m sure that the wire in that fence will be rusting in a short period of time. Y’all have a great and wonderful day and remember to take a moment to smell the roses!
