The Musketeers, True Detective: 14 thrilling new shows for 2014 By Morgan Jeffery Cast off those post-Christmas blues - 2014 is just around the corner and already its looking like next year might out-do the past 12 months when it comes to top quality TV comedy and drama! Theres plenty of old favourites returning to the schedules - more on that tomorrow - but also a ton of exciting new shows heading your way. Digital Spy has picked out just a few of the best - heres what you cant afford to miss in the New Year... the 14 most thrilling new shows for 2014. Legends (TNT) Sean Bean returns to series television for this new thriller series, which sees the Game of Thrones star play an undercover operative who undergoes a major identity crisis. Heroes star Ali Larter also stars in Mr Beans triumphant telly comeback, which is from the same team as Homeland. Mob City (TNT / FOX UK) Oscar nominee Frank Darabont teams with his Walking Dead cohorts Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey DeMunn - plus Prison Break actor Robert Knepper, Heroes veteran Milo Ventimiglia and Star Treks Simon Pegg - for this glossy, star-studded tale of mobsters and coppers going at it in 1940s Los Angeles, which gets its UK debut in 2014. True Detective (HBO / Sky Atlantic) Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson lead the cast of one of 2014s most hotly-anticipated new drama series. The pair play two investigators on a hunt for a killer that spans 17 years. Also featuring Source Codes Michelle Monaghan as Harrelsons wife, True Detective looks moody and magnificent. Looking (HBO / Sky Atlantic) Glee favourite Jonathan Groff - so good in the underrated political drama Boss - stars in this heartfelt drama, which follows the lives of three gay men looking for love in San Francisco. The UKs own Russell Tovey also appears in Looking - a show that promises to be boys answer to Girls. Penny Dreadful (Showtime / Sky Atlantic) An incredible cast (Billie Piper, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green) isnt the only thing that this monster-mash thriller - which blends the mythologies of Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and more - has going for it. Its also sprung the minds of Skyfall dream team Sam Mendes and writer John Logan, while The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona is behind the camera. The Musketeers (BBC One) Alexandre Dumass classic yarn is given a new lick of paint in this spirited and action-packed new adaptation, which will see four musketeers Luke Pasqualino, Tom Burke, Santiago Cabrera and Howard Charles clashing swords with magnificently bearded baddie Peter Capaldi. The Game (BBC One) Brian Cox and Tom Hughes head back to the Cold War for this cerebral spy thriller created by Being Human overlord Toby Whithouse. Charting an MI5 units covert investigation into a secret Soviet plot, The Game promises thrilling mysteries, complex characters and some rather fetching 70s fashions. Fleming (Sky Atlantic) The names Fleming... Ian Fleming. Dominic Cooper plays the creator of James Bond in this glamorous biopic, which explores the famed authors early days spent working as an intelligence officer and romancing glamorous ladies Muriel Wright - played by Peaky Blinders actress Annabelle Wallis - and Ann Charteris - brought to life by Sherlocks Lara Pulver. Suspects (Channel 5) Channel 5 unveils its first original drama in 8 years - a new and gritty take on the procedural cop drama. Fay Ripley and Being Humans Damien Molony star in the ground-breaking Suspects - shock in mockumentary style, youll feel like youre right there alongside the coppers. The Smoke (Sky1) Battlestar Galacticas Jamie Bamber and Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker front this new firefighter series - the highlight of Sky1s original programming in 2014. Passions will burn white hot in this searing new drama, which promises to set our screens alight. Chris Lilleys Jonah Takalua / Jamie: Private School Girl (BBC Three) Mr Lilley, you spoil us - the Australian comic is back with not one but two new series in 2014, revisiting old favourites Jonah and Jamie in their very own shows! In Jonahs series, well see his time spent as a teenage delinquent on the island of Tonga, while Jamie: Private School Girl sees Miss King completing her final year back at Hillford Girls Grammar School after her stint at Summer Heights High. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (BBC One) Based on Susanna Clarkes fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a bold and ambitious tale of magic and mystery set at the beginning of the 19th century and starring Tyrannosaurs Eddie Marsan and Les Misérables actor Bertie Carvel as the title characters - sounds enchanting! The Honourable Woman (BBC Two) In an impressive coup, BBC Two has recruited Hollywood star Maggie Gyllenhaal to head up this fast paced, labyrinthine thriller as Nessa Stein. A globe-trotting adventure - set in the UK, US and Middle East - The Honourable Woman has been devised by The Shadow Line genius Hugo Blick, with the supporting cast including Broadchurch actor Andrew Buchan, The IT Crowd star Katherine Parkinson and Eve Best of Nurse Jackie fame. Cucumber / Banana (Channel 4 / E4) Russell T Davies is back - returning to his roots, the Queer as Folk creator is penned two new gay-themed drama series. Cucumber - airing on Channel 4 - follows 46-year-old Henry and his boyfriend on a disastrous date night, while E4s Banana is its youth-oriented spinoff. Welcome back, Russell! Honourable Mentions... - Intelligence (CBS) - Losts Josh Holloway returns to TV in this high-tech thriller playing a spy with a computer chip in his brain - think Chuck played straight. - Gracepoint (FOX) - Original Broadchurch star David Tennant teams with Breaking Bads Anna Gunn for this US remake of the hit ITV whodunnit. - Girl Meets World (Disney Channel) - The daughter of Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) takes centre stage in this 90s nostalgia-fest. - Doll & Em (Sky Living) - Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells play themselves - well, sort of - in this story of female friendship and showbiz satire. - Crossbones (NBC) - Neil Cross - creator of Luther - is at the helm of this piratical drama starring John Malkovich as Blackbeard. - Wayward Pines (FOX) - M Night Shyamalan does Twin Peaks in this new supernatural series from US network Fox. - The Ark (BBC One) - Hermione Norris and Suranne Jones lead this star-studded six-part World War One drama. - Prey (ITV) - - John Simm plays a cop suspected of murder in this intense cat-and-mouse tale.
