The National Chairman of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Alh Bamanga Tukur has tongue lashed the breakaway faction of the party led by former vice president Atiku Abubakar and seven governors elected under the platform of the party. The aggrieved seven are: Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); Abdulafatah Ahmed (Kwara); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa); and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers). The faction had staged a walk out from the special national convention of the party to elect its own parallel national executive committee members headed by Alhaji Kawu Baraje, who was a former acting national chairman of the PDP. In its swift reactions to the parallel, Bamanga Tukur told journalists at the eagles square in Abuja that “those who staged the walk out and organised a kangaroo meeting are all self-seeking and treacherous individuals pursuing neither regional nor religious agenda except their own agenda and personal interests.” He dismissed their action with a wave of hand saying they are merely creating a problem where non exits even as he declared that his faction backed by President Goodluck Jonathan “is studying the situation as it unfolds and will deal with it decisively as the situation warrants.” Meanwhile, the Atiku led faction explained that they staged a walkout from the party’s convention because “the party’s constitution has been serially violated by Alhaji Tukur and his fellow travellers,” adding that “all the organs of the party have been rendered virtually ineffectual by a few people who act as though they are above the law.” Alh Baraje lamented further that “in gross violation of the PDP constitution which stipulates that the NEC meeting must hold at least once in a quarter, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and a few people have been running the party like a personal fiefdom without recourse to that important decision-making organ of the party. “Unfortunately, it is obvious that they get encouragement from the presidency whose old calculations are geared towards shutting out any real or imagined opposition ahead of the party’s presidential primaries for the 2015 elections.”
