The National Trust for Scotland has released pictures of the devastating fire which destroyed the old Inverewe House – 100 years to the day since the tragedy took place. The house was irreparably damaged, but thankfully no-one was injured in the dramatic events which unfolded on 25 April 1914. Although grainy, the images show the fire raging, as the crew of the HMS Zealandia salvage furniture and other items. The ship was stationed nearby, ahead of the outbreak of World War 1. A replacement house was built by Mairi Sawyer, daughter of the garden’s founder Osgood Mackenzie, and completed in 1937. The news comes as plans are progressing which will see the current Inverewe House brought back into use after 10 years – these are being developed by LDN Architects. These will see the house transformed with visitor facilities on the ground floor, featuring the authentic presentation of key rooms and their collections and modern interpretation facilities downstairs, with improved staff accommodation upstairs. Property Manager Roy Dowsett said: “100 years on since the old house was destroyed, it’s excellent to have a glimpse of our new plans for its replacement. These will add to the visitor experience at Inverewe and improve facilities for the community, visitors and those working at the garden.”
