The Negative Effects of Sugar on Mental Health: Increased Risk of Depression: Researchers have found a strong correlation between the consumption of refined sugar and increased risk of depression. Worsening of schizophrenia symptoms were also seen in those eating a high-sugar diet. Depression affects 22 percent of Americans and is twice as common in women as in men. Why Sugar Effects Mental Health: Two potential reasons why refined sugar may affect mental health: Sugar suppresses the activity of a certain growth hormone known as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which plays a role in triggering the growth of new connections between neurons in the brain. BDNF levels are known to be very low in patients suffering from depression or schizophrenia. Eating refined sugar promotes chronic inflammation. Inflammation is indicated in many health issues, but appears to up the risk of both depression and schizophrenia. More Good Reasons to Limit the Sugar in Your Diet: Some doctors have begun advising patients to at least try eliminating sugars and simple carbohydrates from their diets. Many are showing astounding results, with elevated moods, better outlooks in general, more energy, and clearer thinking. If thats not enough to convince you, there is also compelling evidence that continually elevated insulin levels may shorten life span.
