The New Guinea Singing Dog, one of the rarest dogs in the world, - TopicsExpress

The New Guinea Singing Dog, one of the rarest dogs in the world, is getting some attention as researchers attempt to find and obtain a non-invasive tissue sample for genotypic verification. This is all in the hopes of infusing wild bloodlines into the already captive-bred populations in zoos and other research groups. These dogs (also known as Highland Wild Dogs) are extremely shy, solitary creatures making them difficult to study in their natural habitat of Papua New Guinea. Even now as researchers try to track the dogs, they seem to prefer the densely forested Western areas of New Guinea away from human populations. Their characteristic "songs" have been described as “a wolf howl with overtones of whale song” and although they are solitary creatures, when they get together in a group these dogs can be quite noisy! There is a link below that has a sound byte of the howl.
