The ‘New Woman’ was a figure developed in the early 20th century used to describe the emerging personal independence enjoyed by women. The ‘New Woman’ no longer wore corsets and clothing that restricted movement; she even traveled on her own thanks to the invention of the bicycle, an item which Susan B Anthony described as doing “more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” This increase in personal freedom was also due to changing marriage and divorce laws and greater access to higher education.
