The No1 song in the US on this day, October 2nd 1965, was Hang On Sloopy by The McCoys. This song peaked at No5 in the UK Written by Bert Berns, the song was originally recorded by the R&B group, The Vibrations, as My Girl Sloopy, reaching No26 on the US charts in 1964. In 1985 the song was named the official rock song of the state of Ohio. The resolution to that bill went like this; WHEREAS, Hang On Sloopy is of particular relevance to members of the Baby Boom Generation, who were once dismissed as a bunch of long haired, crazy kids, but who now are old enough and vote in sufficient numbers to be taking quite seriously; and WHEREAS, adoption of this resolution will not take too long, cost the state anything, or affect the quality of life in this state to any appreciatable degree, and if we in the legislature just go ahead and pass the darn thing, we can get on with more important stuff; and WHEREAS, Sloopy lives in a very bad part of town, and everybody, yeah, tries to my Sloopy down; and WHEREAS, Sloopy I dont care what your daddy do, cause you know, Sloopy girl, Im in love with you; therefore beat it.(I swear to God, thats the actual Bill) Heres the McCoys doing Hang On Sloopy in 1966....Enjoy!
