The Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act Section 170B is ruining my love - TopicsExpress

The Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act Section 170B is ruining my love for skateboarding. This is my email to local MP Megan Leslie. Lets hope she reads and agrees! Hi Megan. My name is Wyndham Bourne and I have lived on the corner of North St. and Northwood Terrace for 1 year, and have just signed on for another 1 year lease at the same location. I love the neighbourhood! I was born and raised in Halifax, I am 23 years old and I work for the Scotiabank Contact Centre in Scotia Square Mall. I voted for you in the last election and this is my first time writing you. My reason for writing is to express my concern and frustration with 170B of the Motor Vehicle Act: No person shall ride on or operate a scooter, skate board, in-line skates, roller skates or other device prescribed by the regulations unless the person is wearing a helmet that complies with the regulations and the chin strap of the helmet is securely fastened under the chin. I have paid one fine of approximately $145.00 already, and a few days a go I received my second ticket, for a similar amount. It is my belief that this regulation is extremely unfair. To incur this fine, an individual can simply stand on a skate board, with no helmet, on the side walk in front of their house. Another way to get a ticket is to ride a board while not wearing a helmet down a quiet back street, where a car may pass once every 15 minutes. To take a different point of view, I believe that it is unreasonable to ride a board in the street with no helmet if it is a busy street, where a collision with a motor vehicle is more likely. I can also understand why motorists do not want boarders getting in their way on city streets, as boards offer little bodily protection and can not keep pace with motor vehicles or cyclists. This regulation has some reasonable and some unreasonable aspects, but I believe that wearing a helmet should be the choice of the skate board rider, not the choice of government officials and police, most of whom are unlikely skate board riders themselves. My personal reasons for not wearing a helmet are numerous and I believe they are very reasonable. I have attempted to fight this fine before, by pleading not guilty to the ticket, and explaining to a judge the circumstances of my riding a board without head protection. The result was my having to pay the fine. I ask you to please discuss this matter with your peers in our local government, and amend this law to erase the fine penalty given to skate boarders who choose not to wear helmets and who choose to ride a board in the street when it is safe to do so. Sincerely, Wyndham
