The Oscar nominated The Gatekeepers is a documentary about the Shin Bet, Israel’s secret security force that was established in 1949 and acts under the direct authority of the Prime Minister. For the first time ever six former heads of the agency candidly share their insights and reflect publicly on some of the crucial hard line decisions they made in the on-going war against terror. They are fairly frank and forthright in discussing the tradecraft of the organisation and intelligence gathering operations, interrogations and even assassinations. They talk candidly about state-sanctioned assassinations and the bombings of terror suspects, and even the risk of collateral damage. What is surprising though is that each of the former security chiefs are often very cynical and critical of their government’s treatment of the Palestinian issue. But unfortunately the film itself is rather dull and dry, as director Moreh has used a lot of talking heads interviews to shape his film. It hardly makes for riveting viewing.
