The Owyhee County Historical Society will host the annual Idaho Genealogical Society (IGS) meeting and conference on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Murphy Museum located at 17085 Basey St., Murphy, Idaho. Mary O’Malley is the Chairman. This year’s theme is the Idaho Sesquicentennial Anniversary celebrating 150 years of Idaho becoming a Territory from 1863-1890. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. IGS will address issues facing both state and local genealogical and historical societies throughout Idaho including membership, volunteers, fund drives, and technology as well as hold the annual election of officers and board of directors. The All-Day Conference features three qualified speakers: Historian Tom Blanchard, Musician John Larsen, and Genealogist Christa Klemme. Tom Blanchard’s presentation is “Mining in Idaho: Today and Yesterday.” Although born and raised in Wisconsin, Tom and his family moved to Bellevue, Idaho after Tom graduated from the University of Californian at San Francisco with an M.A. in American history. He and his wife continue to live in Bellevue where he researches Idaho and local history with a special interest in mining. He has taught American and Idaho history for CSI and special programs on various topics for IHC Speakers Bureau since its inception. He has served on numerous elected and volunteer boards including the Blaine County Commission and the Idaho Humanities Council. He currently serves as Chairman of the Idaho State Historical Society Board of Trustees. Blanchard’s talk is sponsored through a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. John M. Larsen’s presentation is “Songs of Early Idaho (1863-1890).” John has been a contributing editor to six national magazines and has written over 800 stories, articles, poems and songs, and had been the president of the Owyhee County Historical Society. Folk music, historical ballads, and gospel music have been and still are a part of his life; he is currently a member of two bands. He became interested in folk songs before WWII and first performed at the age of six years. Additional to his music interests, he is also the Superintendent of the City of Marsing. Christa Klemme, an Idaho native, will discuss the importance of “Leaving Your Legacy” for future generations. A history graduate of Boise State University and mother of four, Christa has served as Family History Consultant for the both the Meridian West and Eagle Family History Centers as well as a trainer. Since 2009, she has taught various classes for BYU-Idaho Conferences both in the spring and fall. She also has taught classes for the Dead Relative Collectors, the Owyhee County Historical Society, and the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees. She is currently working towards becoming a Certified Genealogist through the Board of Certification of Genealogists. The conference also features a tour of the OCHS Museum, its archives, and an old schoolhouse which is on the premises. Conference registration is just $25 for IGS and OCHS members which include lunch. Non-member rates are $30 for early registration or $35 at the door.
