The Oyo State Government on Tuesday said it suspected sabotage by the opposition over the pulling down of a barrier erected to bar heavy duty vehicles from plying the recently constructed flyover bridge, built to ease traffic around Mokola roundabout, Ibadan. A small pickup van, trying to force its way through the flyover, had pulled off one of the barrier on Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle did not succeed in pulling off the other on the other end forcing the driver to take a detour before he was arrested by the Police. The state government, in a release sent to journalists in the day, said it suspected that the opposition demolished the barrier in the night and left it hanging precariously for a vehicle to hit and drop to prove their point that the barrier was constructed to protect the bridge they alleged to be of low quality. In a statement, Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s spokesperson, Festus Adedayo, said, “the ministry of works was working on the theory that the barrier had probably been demolished over night and the carcass was left hanging only for it to be hit by the oncoming truck”. He said the opposition had, a few weeks ago, threatened to pull down the barrier. “About three weeks ago, government had alerted the public, through a press statement, of the plan by the opposition to demolish the barrier. “In the release, broadcast on the state Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), the government alleged that it had received security report to the effect that some political thugs had been commissioned by the opposition to demolish the flyover’s barrier which the opposition claimed was an indication that the bridge was substandard”. Since it was commissioned in June, the opposition, particularly, Accord, had consistently challenged the state government on the quality and cost of the bridge. The opposition party alleged that the quality was poor and that the cost was inflated.
