The Patriot “A good shepherd takes care of his flock. And sometimes that means he has to fight off the wolves.” That’s the statement of the fictional character who plays the local pastor of Charleston in Mel Gibson’s movie “The Patriot”.This is a movie that is well worth seeing. It is violent in that it shows the terror of war. Not as bad as Saving Private Ryan but realistic none the less. But you will not find obscenity, nudity, or even a suggestive situation in the film. What you will discover is a realistic, grassroots look at the American War for Independence. The Patriot is an honest look at the great difficulties colonists faced in putting action to their words. And it shows the price of taking action as well as remaining silent. And you will find a pastor, who like many in the Colonial era, was not afraid to walk from his pulpit to the battlefield for the sake of leading and caring for his flock. It comes as a surprise to many that American pastors made a huge difference in securing America’s freedom from Great Britain and in establishing our constitutional form of Government. Gibson’s film “The Patriot” is one of the only movies to ever give credit to the vital role that pastors played in the struggle for liberty. If you haven’t seen it – please consider going. Its that good. A little too violent for small children, but truly a wonderful history lesson for the rest of us. And a deeply moving, entertaining and inspiring film that seeks to give some justice to the powerful role of the church in America’s history.
