The Pickford has decided to have a series of Samurai Sundays - TopicsExpress

The Pickford has decided to have a series of Samurai Sundays starting this week on the 18th. Although not officially related to the Masters of Japanese Cinema series (about which more shortly), it’s closely related – think of it as an appetizer for the MoJC series starting in October. We’ve shown four of the films listed below in the MoJC series in the past, so if you missed them before or want to see them again on the big screen, now’s your chance. Three of them have never been screened at the Pickford before. All will be presented in gorgeous high definition restorations on the Pickford’s stunning DCP projector. All films start at noon with the exception of Seven Samurai, which starts at 11am (by the way, when we showed Seven Samurai at 11am on a Saturday in the first year of the series, we sold out the old Pickford space). Here is the list of films: 8/18 Seven Samurai 8/25 The Hidden Fortress 9/1 Yojimbo 9/8 Harakiri 9/15 The Sword of Doom 9/22 Samurai Rebellion 9/29 KILL! The first three films are by Kurosawa Akira; Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion are by the great Kobayashi Masaki; and The Sword of Doom and KILL! are by Okamoto Kihachi, a director we’ve not shown yet in the MoJC series. Except for the first two films, all date from the 1960s, and all can be considered as revisionist samurai films that question the uses of violence (but without sacrificing action!).
