The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). My husband and I watched this - TopicsExpress

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). My husband and I watched this movie last night. The acting is superb. I have to say there are parts of it that have gotten uncomfortably under my skin. The story is sort of told in segments which, although disjointed, still seem to be perfectly interwoven. It almost feels like you are watching three separate films. The first segment follows Luke Glanton (played by Ryan Gosling) who goes to some bad extremes in order to provide for his ex-girlfriend and their infant son. Bradley Cooper only enters the film in the finale of this segment. The second segment follows Coopers character Avery through his troubles with a guilty conscience worsened by his corrupt co-workers in the police department. The final segment follows the sons of both Luke and Avery. At this point, it is now 15 years down the road and both sons are teens who happen to meet at school. The sins of their absent fathers come back as a reflection in their rebellious behavior. The story seems to come full circle in the end. Though it was hard to watch in several places for me, I appreciate tales of redemption. You will find no perfect angels in this movie. The characters fluctuate from being innocent and dedicated to misguided to reckless to dangerous to remorseful and finally to redeemable in the end.
