The Polar Vortex winter is STILL going. It has been an incredible winter and spring cant come soon enough. The long winter creates its own issues. Unfortunately, the weather has caused frustrations with our facilities which have not helped our winter doldrums. Allow me to to give a quick update on some facility concerns. While we would prefer to be focused on teaching/learning, the Lower Elementary has had problems with a boiler unit in the older part of the building. The new boiler is working fine. While the unit itself is in adequate working condition, their have been parts replaced and we have had HVAC professionals diagnose and fix the problem. There have been issues with the flame ignition, weve checked gas pressure, and weve even replaced several parts and we are monitoring it closely. We realize the issues this causes to our classrooms but I want you to know that we are taking this very seriously. If we feel it is unsafe conditions for kids we will close school for the day. If you remember, we closed the ECC on Carr Rd when the boiler malfunctioned for a day. At the Upper Elementary, weve had pipes and heater coils freeze/break and cause water to flow into classrooms....twice. Kids were relocated to a warm place in the building. They were never unsafe...but were inconvenienced. Both issues were related to outside temperatures. Most recently, we had electrical issues which prevented classroom fan units from blowing the heat. A controller went bad causing electricity not to get to the blowers. It is now fixed. Again, kids were never in unsafe conditions. We have been proactively paying attention to our facility issues. For example, we have already purchased roofing material to address leaks on the Middle School roof. Once the snow melts, we can get to that project this summer. Our Eagle Strategic Plan, which had tremendous feedback from the community, states in Strategic Focus Area #6.A ....we will develop a master facilities plan and #6.B states we will establish an annual facilities maintenance plan. These 2 strategic focus areas were initiated in the fall and are scheduled to be reported to the Board this Spring with recommendations to address a variety of facilities issues (HVAC, grounds, roofing, asphalt, etc). We are listening to your concerns. Our new Facilities director/supervisor has extensive knowledge and experience for both the response to issues that arise and forward planning. I hope this demonstrates we are taking facility issues seriously. While we cannot control the weather nor predict electrical issues, we can respond to issues as they occur and communicate the fix that will occur. Please let me, your principal, or our Operations Department know of any concerns. We will address them. Sincerely, Tom Livezey Superintendent
