The Port Aransas City Council today, Thursday, May 8, approved a first reading of an ordinance to declare a 61-day moratorium on allowing construction of large retail stores. The vote was 7-0. The ordinance must pass a second reading by the council on Thursday, May 15 to make the moratorium official. About an hour before the council meeting today, the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-1 to recommend that the council enact the moratorium. The council has signaled that it wants the moratorium in place to give it time to pass an ordinance permanently limiting the amount of square footage that a retail business can be in Port Aransas, except by special permit. City staff has suggested 25,000 square feet as a limit. Approving an ordinance limiting square footage will require passage of three readings by the council. That could happen at meetings on May 15 and in June and July. The moratorium, if it is enacted, will have to be extended to keep one in place through the July meeting.
