The Red-Shouldered Hawk has been in the news lately. Hawks like to build their nests near ponds, streams, or swamps, which can include suburban neighborhoods and parks. On their own territories, Red-Shouldered Hawks are aggressive. They will fight off anything that appears to be a threat. That’s why there have been local reports of hawks swooping down and scratching people passing by nests. This particular Red-Shouldered Hawk was spotted yesterday along the creek bank. It appeared to be injured by the way it held its wing. It’s unclear how the hawk was injured, but my guess would be it was defending a nest. –Janelle Homan
