The Rubber Bomb Sneaky The Poor Mans Kon-Tiki left Ventura on August 2, 1954 with five hardy adventuros on an odyssey to the Santa Catalina Island. At the helm was John W. Strobel III, who at the time was 22. The cruise was planned as a take off on that famed raft Kon-Tiki, which floated from Peru to the Polynesian Islands. There first try was on July 22, 1954, but were plucked off their raft by the Coast Guard Cutter Morris despite their protests that were doing fine. The raft was made of 100 innertubes lashed together and wired with a few boards. Others who sailed in addition to Strobel, were Kenny Kiunke, 21; Dick Davidson, 21; Jimmy Mills, 20, and Jerry Straughan, 22.
