The Russian invasion of Crimea prompted me to research the Crimean War. In Oct 25, 1854, British troops were deployed at the Battle of Balaklava, inspiring Tennysons poem The Charge of The Light Brigade. The justification for the Russian invasions that triggered the war was the same as today: To defend ethnic Russians. In that day they were defending Christian Russians against Muslim Turks and they invaded part of what is now Romania, not Crimea which they already held. But much of the fighting took place on Crimea, with the British, French and Turkish allies attacking Russian strongholds there. One of the more courageous acts took place when the admiral of the Russian fleet realized his fleet was doomed and that the port of Sevastopol would be overtaken by British ships. In a brilliant and risky move, he ordered his entire fleet scuttled in the mouth of the harbor, preventing the British fleet from entering. It left him without a fleet and without a means to counter attack had his plan failed.
