The Sandwich Method A friend is heading in the wrong direction - should you speak up? You may have tried it in the past, only to be met with a war of words. So now you decide to keep quiet, and say to yourself It’s really none of my business and Let him make his own mistake... But doesnt friendship and loyalty require you to speak up? After all, that is what friends are for! Those who have the privilege to know, have the duty to act. ~ Albert Einstein So you have decided to speak up, and you know of course that your advice will be accepted only if you voice your opinion the right way - without hurting the other person’s feelings. This is where the sandwich method comes in, putting the critical remark between two positive comments, thus making it more easily accepted. But be careful - the slices of the sandwich have to be true and meaningful - no empty talk. When you make your point, try to see the other person’s angle, too. He may have arguments that you didnt think of, and that could be an opportunity to learn something. And if your intervention leads to an open and honest discussion, that’s the best thing that could happen to both of you. Is somebody you care for about to make a mistake? Start preparing that sandwich!
