The Scots has given the world many things - and have arguably shaped it to the world we know now more than many other nations - John Logie Bairds development of television, James Watts Steam Engine, Alexander Flemings discovery of penicillin to name, but a few. Now researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the National Museums of Scotland after a strenuous and painstaking amount of work have compiled a full picture & identified a marine lizard of the Jurassic period. This achievement to over 50 years and was largely down to the relentless work of one man - Brian Shawcross - an amateur researcher. The new (or rather 170 million year old discovery) of this species has only recently been announced - named for him and the Gaelic word for marine lizard. At 4.2 meters (139 ft.) creature would have been a fearsome predator - described as a cross between a crocodile and a dolphin.
