The Scottish Referendum: This is very confusing for me since my father was a Scot (with a capital S), and my mother a Yorkshire lass. Now as anyone who knows me will tell you, Im not known for reluctance to express my opinions on political matters, but this one really divides me down the middle! All I can say is that I hope the vote is decisive one way or another, in order to forestall any nasty recriminations...which would be the worst possible outcome (although, at the moment this looks unlikely). By nature (and my own life story!) Im an internationalist, and regard enthusiastic nationalism with skepticism (thats the Canadian in me coming out!) but I have to admit that it can bring about a positive rebirth in some countries as well as a reactionary desire to stifle the other. Thats all I have to say on this subject. Ill be watching the results next week of course, but for the first time in my life, I wont be cheering for either side in a vote!
