"The Secret Servant Your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly (Matthew 6:4, New King James Version). Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18 Song: Several times in the book of Matthew we find Jesus telling the people, in effect: “Don’t be a show-off. Pray, give, and help others in secret.” For instance, in Matthew 23 He pointed at the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, saying: “Don’t be like them. Everything they do is for show. They want everyone to see how good they are. That is their reward.” A show-off is like a peacock, spreading his feathers, trying to get the attention of a young miss, getting her to see how beautiful he is. Only the male has these beautiful feathers, which equal more than 60% of his total length. He likes to strut around with the finery fanned across his back, touching the ground on either side. And when the female responds, he has his reward. So it is with those who make sure to let others know about their goodness. They are viewed with admiration, put on a pedestal, honored with the respect they feel is their due. They have received their reward. Sadly, the reward turns to dust. Jesus calls us to fast, pray, and do good in secret. If we humble ourselves, God sees, and His reward Human praises are momentary, but a reward from You will last for eternity.
