The Sevenfold Excellences of Jesus Christ (Read Hebrews 1:2-3) One of the most intriguing and amazing books in the New Testament for me is the Book of Hebrews. From that grand opening “God, who at various times and in various ways…”, to the elaborate descriptions of types and shadows from The Law and how it all marries up with the message of the Gospel and in essence, the whole new covenant, this book blesses my heart in ways I cannot easily express. In the opening chapter given above are shown seven attributes of Christ which I outline below… 1. He is the Son of God – the second person of the trinity (Luk_4:22, Joh_1:14, Joh_1:17-18) 2. Heir of all things – All authority in heaven, on earth and in the underworld is His (Heb_2:8-9, Mat_28:18, Eph_1:20-23; Phi_2:9-11) 3. The express image of God – The very physical manifestation of the invisible, inconceivable God (2Co_4:4; Col_1:15-16) 4. The brightness of God’s glory – Christ was the very expression of the Shekinah Glory of God, made flesh (2Co_4:6, Heb_9:5) 5. Upholds all things by the word of His Power – Everything within the physical universe consist through Him, for Him and in Him! He thus exists outside the confines of time and space! (Col_1:16-17; Rev_4:11) 6. Purged our sins by Himself – Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice, paying the penalty of our sin – the bloodiest death in the most shameful way – on the cross of Calvary thereby appeasing the wrath of God once and for all! (Heb_7:27, 9:12-14, 9:16, 26; Joh_1:29) 7. Sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high – He now sits in heavenly places – those He calls His own – alongside Him! (Eph_1:20-22; Col_3:1; 1Pe_1:21, 1Pe_3:22) Wow! What more can I say? – If only to echo the words of Thomas the disciple when Jesus appeared unto Him, “My Lord and My God!” Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art, How great Thou art! - Stuart Hine
