The Shadow Class. By Robyn Watford. Please Share. Rebecca and Elle became Mia’s life and eventually Rebecca left home and moved in with an elderly gentleman who lived closer to the Cathedral where she worked. His name was Peter and he lived in a beautiful old home which he had restored many years ago. Peter had been married fort two years beforehand but his wife had died in childbirth along with his baby son. He had never remarried and became a fixture at his local Catholic church. He practically ran the church and over the years had witnessed many weddings, baptisms and funerals. He often took in teenagers who needed time out from their families. Everybody in the community knew Peter he and Rebecca took an instant liking to each other. Rebecca went home to visit Mia, William and Elle for dinner each week and often took Peter. along. Elle was still experiencing blackouts occasionally but with Mia caring for her she couldnt have been in better hands. Mia had given the girls all the opportunities they would have had if their parents hadnt died. While Rebecca continued with art classes throughout her school years Elle was taken to Girl Guide meetings each week. Mia stayed close by but Elle still wasnt permitted to go on camps. Mia spent countless hours showing photos and telling Elle all about her mother and father and they had become very close. She was a very strong and healthy girl and exercised regularly. Rebecca had shown her the photos of the weekend they had spent camping at Alastair’s home, where she had made friends with his son. Unfortunately she couldn’t remember any of it. She also explained to Elle that she always got on better with boys because she was the tomboy out of the two of them and her father had loved that about her character. She had grown into a stunning looking woman but wasnt at all aware of how beautiful she was. So attractive that she could have been a model. Of course she would laugh when people would suggest it to her. She couldnt stand the thought of wearing makeup and dresses preferring to dress for comfort. Rebecca managed to accept her injuries and her friends at school had been very supportive. She still avoided situations where she met new people and concentrated on her studies. She received a scholarship to study fine art at university and there again worked painstakingly to achieve high marks. She had been assured her surgery would be successful when she eventually had the time as it would take a few operations and months of healing. She was determined to pay for it herself and saved every cent she earned. She was particularly talented in Trompe-L’oeil and her art was so realistic you felt you could walk right into the scenes she painted. It was while working on a cathedral ceiling she me Peter, who had been employed to replaster and reinforce the ceiling and that was when he took her under his wing. The ceiling was seventy feet high and Rebecca became very comfortable dangling from the scaffolding. She was still very self conscious about her disfigured face so was happy to spend most of her days out of sight. Over the years she had become a master painter who could turn her hand to many different styles. The painstaking work at the cathedral was very consuming so in her spare time she would splash around in the studio at Peters and experimented with many different styles. When she was overloaded with work Peter would deliver it to charities for auctions. She never signed her paintings and Peter understood why she wanted to remain unknown. Peter often came home exhausted and Rebecca loved to cook for him. Her mother had taught her how to cook and on weekends she and Peter would go to the markets. He taught her to drive and sometimes they would take Elle out for the day so she could practice. Peter always gave Rebecca plenty of space and often they would only see each other at meal time. He loved making model aeroplanes and Rebecca would sometimes find him fast asleep in his den. So between working all day and painting or visiting Elle in her spare time Rebeccas life was busy. Mia and William finally had the family they wanted and made the most of it by making sure the girls felt secure and loved. Each day Mia secretly thanked her beautiful sister for her gift. To be continued tomorrow. Please share.
