The Sky Falls Flash Fiction 250 words The sky falls down, down it falls on top of me. Every day when I wake the sky is crushing me. I crawl out of bed, an enormous effort, as if I am the sheets and the duvet pressing down on myself, and I crawl through the blackness and the pressure. It builds as I walk down the stairs, each step an enormous effort and I wonder if I will ever make it to the bottom, or if every step will continue forever. In the kitchen I turn on the kettle. I put a spoonful of instant coffee in the cup and I pour in the boiling water. And every time, every single time, I think, if I slip, accidentally, I will have to go to A and E and maybe I could tell them about the sky falling on top of me. Maybe they will tuck me up in bed and protect me from the sky. Maybe, just for today. To get through the day and the sky pressing down on me so heavily, I remember the jobs I must do. So I don’t stand by the back door looking at the sky, watching it getting closer and closer. Instead I pull open the cupboard doors and I prepare the packed lunches, radio four on in the background. Something for me to shout at, something for me to cry about. Because the tears come every morning and I can always say, ‘it was a sad story on the radio’.
