The Society of Construction Law (Singapore) wishes to extend an invitation to the members of TUCSS to attend its upcoming event, at the preferential rates as set out in the flyer attached. Construction Insolvency – Views from Alpine Bau’s Liquidators and Lawyers (19 March 2014) 146 Robinson Road, Singapore 068909 The insolvency of Alpine Bau GmbH has been described as what could be Austria’s biggest corporate collapse since World War Two. Their estimated liabilities amounted to more than 2.6 billion EURO and affected some 6,500 employees. Worldwide (excluding Austria), Alpine has branch offices in various parts of Europe, India, China and Singapore. Before its insolvency, the story of Alpines success reflects the globalisation of business and how overseas construction companies have ventured out of their home countries, including to Singapore, to undertake construction work. We see many of them here and they come from all over the world. Many of our civil and rail contractors are overseas companies. What happens when they become insolvent? Mr Abuthahir Abdul Gafoor will share some of the practical experience in dealing with such complex insolvencies, which often affect several sub-contractors, employees, landlord, and other stakeholders. Mr Koh Kia Jeng will touch on the unique legal challenges faced when a construction company becomes insolvent. What rights would an Employer have? How can the Employer ensure that the development suffers as little delay as possible from this traumatic event? How are sub-contractors rights affected? He will also touch on the situation where a foreign company is involved. Where would and should a sub-contractor file its claim for work done? Both Mr Abuthahir Abdul Gafoor and Mr Koh Kia Jeng will touch on these issues. To secure your place, please download, complete and send us the attached REGISTRATION FORM or you may REGISTER ONLINE by 12 March 2014.
