The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is appreciative of AAA for recognizing Henry 1 pilot Paul Bradley, as a Rescuer of the Year. Sheriff Steve Freitas and Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Chairman David Rabbitt were on hand at the Henry 1 hangar for the ceremony. Bob Brown Vice President of Communications for AAA Northern California presented Paul with an award. Paul graciously accepted on behalf of the Henry 1 crew present, TFO Deputy Chris Mahoney and Paramedic Scott Freedman. AAA donated $10,000 to the non-profit Friends of Henry1. Friends of Henry 1 provides support to the Sheriff’s Office regional rescue helicopter program by promoting community awareness and education. They also encourage private funding in order to continually increase the capabilities, availability, and safety of the aircraft and its crew. Several members of the organization, who also are Search and Rescue Team volunteers, were present for the ceremony. Tim Admire accepted the donation on behalf of Friends of Henry 1. The Rescuer of the Year Award stems from a May 2013 incident in which Paul, TFO Deputy Mahoney and Paramedic Don Ricci came to the assistance of nine rescue personnel who were at risk of being stranded overnight along the rocky and cold coastline in Del Norte County. Conditions were less than optimal and ever-changing, making the mission difficult. In less than 20 minutes, the Henry-1 crew had successfully and safely rescued everyone by executing a long line technique. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Helicopter Unit is a law enforcement unit charged with multi-mission responsibilities. Those duties include Long line, Search and Rescue, ALS Medical Transport, Law Enforcement and Fire Suppression. Henry 1 averages 80-110 rescues per year with only one helicopter and one crew. They complete between from 600 to 1,000 Law Enforcement calls a year and roughly 7 fire calls. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is very proud of the courageous work performed by the crew of Henry 1. The helicopter unit has a long history with our agency and this region. Our past and present crew members have done incredible work for the citizens of the county and others. We are grateful for the recognition by AAA and the continued support of the people of Sonoma County.
