The South is really the bigger issue in that the Houthis accept - TopicsExpress

The South is really the bigger issue in that the Houthis accept the political system, the PNAP and seek to restore order within the government. The South wants out. October 14 will bring mass demonstrations calling for re-partition of Yemen under the premise that the northern state it unified with no longer exists. Or under the premise that unity was never accomplished, instead Saleh;s forces occupied the South by force in 1994. Or under the premises implied in UN resolutions 924 and 931 which required a mediated settlement. Or under the premise of institutionalized discrimination and looting of all resources and dignity in the south. The theory doesnt matter. Since 2011, there has been no real rapprochement and no authentic confidence building measures on the part of the central government. On the public level, general disinterest is prevalent with the sense southerners are whining unreasonably and those jailed for their disagreeable speech like Khaled and Anwar are less of a priority than those jailed for agreeable speech. Or those jailed in Aden are less a priority than those jailed in Sanaa. Or those kids in Aden and Abyan out of school- for a year - are less a priority than those kids out of school for a week in Sanaa. I know the dead have yet to be buried and its not a good day to talk about the south, but it never is. The good day hasnt come since 2007 or 1994. All the southerners I spoke to send their heartfelt sympathies to Sanaa, but they send them not as countrymen but as citizens of another state. I think the real earthquake is still to come.
