The Story Behind Lynn Goldsmith’s Photos of Bruce Lynn - TopicsExpress

The Story Behind Lynn Goldsmith’s Photos of Bruce Lynn Goldsmith met Bruce in 1977 when she was a photographer for Rolling Stone and he was recording Darkness at the Edge of Town and the two began seeing one another. Coming back from a two year hiatus after Born to Run, Bruce had settled a court case with his ex-managers, written dozens of new songs and was about to embark on the 1978 Darkness tour of 1,000 to 5,000 seat concert halls. He invited her to come along to photograph it, promising her unlimited access, a privilege he had never offered a previous photographer and has not done since. She accepted. The tour is regarded as a seminal moment of his career, and her exciting concert photos, widely published, helped him establish himself as a rock icon. She also took more intimate photos which she did not publish. Their relationship and her unlimited access ended with the tour. It culminated in an ugly and very humiliating public scene. She was one of the organizers of the Musicians United for Safe Energy (the No Nukes concert). She was in charge of photo coverage, and her agency was to process all the film for publicity releases. Bruce had completed his triumphant Darkness tour and was invited to perform. When he took the stage he saw her shooting photos. He jumped down, dragged her back up with him, and announced to over 200,000 attendees, “This is my ex-girlfriend”. Then, with all the self-righteous fury of a newly-minted rock god, he tossed her off the stage and into the arms of security, who hustled her out to safety. Bruce went on to become a rock legend and Lynn Goldsmith has become a legendary photographer. Lynn Goldsmith is known as one of the top photographers of rock musicians and she has photographed over 100 album covers and her fine art photographs are exhibited in many museums including the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art. She also has six photo books diaries to her credit, and one is “Access All Areas”, a photo essay of the Darkness tour which contained a few of the intimate photos she took of Bruce. 1) Bruce practicing his stage moves in front of a mirror while Lynn photographs him. 2), 3), 4) Additional photos taken by Lynn Goldsmith during the topless session.
