It is helpful to remember those for whom politics was just the stage for teaching the principles of human dignity. They were not partisans of one group so much as ambassadors for universal human rights. They did not tally how many votes fell on their side, for human rights are never really up for a vote. The darker the night, the higher they lifted the torch. At times of political defeat, it is important to remember those whose message was never contingent upon victory or defeat.
